Upgrading From WordPress 2.7 to 4.3

It has been quite a while since I have posted to my blog, but apparently my older WordPress 2.7 was no longer working. I was seeing an error like the following:

Strict Standards: Declaration of Walker_Page::start_lvl() should be compatible with Walker::start_lvl(&$output)

I was just going to use CPanel to re-install WordPress with the latest version; however, I decided to try and salvage my situation by trying to upgrade.

There was a “readme.html” in the WordPress folder blog that described an upgrade process, so I decided to try it out. The instructions are as follows:

Upgrading from any previous WordPress to 2.7:

  1. Delete your old WP files, saving ones you’ve modified.
  2. Upload the new files.
  3. Point your browser to /wp-admin/upgrade.php.
  4. You wanted more, perhaps? That’s it!

I went ahead and went to the WordPress Download site to download the ZIP file. Then, I backed up my website’s blog directory (ie, where WordPress is installed) and then deleted the contents. Then, I placed the unzipped contents in this directory and used CPanel to upload them. The upgrade.php asks you to have your database name, username, password, host, and prefix (required) handy. After populating them, I had to login to the wp-admin page and I was asked to upgrade my database.

Afterwards, my blog didn’t report errors, but it apparently had a theme that no longer worked, because it defaulted to the “pixelated” theme. This results in a blank page. So, I picked a new theme from those available, installed it, and then activated it. So far, everything seems to be back and available, except for my photos. Currently, I have yet to find a way to recover my posts’ images.
