I am still using a Roomba 530 that I got from my parents like 8 years ago and I have grown somewhat use to the all too frequent “Error 2 Please Open Roomba’s brush cage and clean brushes”. I have taken it apart a bit from time to time to give it a somewhat thorough cleaning. Also, I have replaced the brushes several times. Today, I was constantly getting this error even after doing my normal regiment of cleaning for the Roomba and replacing all of the brushes. I took it apart once more and even popped out the front wheel/caster and found more debris to clean. Alas, Roomba was still complaining with in a minute of turning it back on.
After doing some research online, I was reminding about replacing some shielded bearings with sealed bearings, but I don’t have the black Cleaning Head Module (CHM) (at least I don’t think so…). This took me to another page on cleaning out the CHM gears and a video to show you how to remove the CHM. Wow! There was a lot of hair and dust in the gear case. I thoroughly cleaned this out with apple cider vinegar, Goo Gone, paper towels, and a small flat head screwdriver.
Now it was time to put it back together. It was suggested to use lithium grease on the gears, but I couldn’t find mine, so I used WD-40 Silicone Lubricant instead. Finally, a buttoned everything back up and I can say that it is running like a champ again! I realize that I will likely need to go through this depth of cleaning again, but hopefully I won’t wait another 8 years.
